Dr. Christina Lammer
MedArt/somafilm, University of Applied Arts Vienna and Medical University Vienna
In this seminar, contemporary practices of portraying are discussed. These are not limited to artistic forms. Furthermore biomedical depictions of the face and surgical techniques are included in the research framework. Based on the self-portraiture or the presentation of the self in everyday life, we investigate the human expressive potential by developing a sensory approach, which shall be combined with ethnographic methods of observation. Portraits of artists are confronted with those of handicapped persons who are confined in their facial expressiveness, and decided to get their mimic disabilities treated in plastic surgery.
Ph.D. from the University of Vienna, Department of Sociology, she lives and works as a sociologist, lecturer and video artist in Vienna. Recently she finished her collaborative research activities CORPOrealities (2004-2009) on empathy and somatic perception at Medical University Vienna (MUV). 2009 she started with the art(s) and science project SURGICAL WRAPPINGS (2009-2014) and explores the material culture of surgery. In a further study FEATURES – VIENNA FACE
PROJECT (2010-2014) Christina Lammer investigates portraiture in plastic and reconstructive surgery and in the visual and performative arts. Recently published: CORPOrealities (Ed.). Vienna, Löcker Verlag, 2010.
